"CRAB IN REEDS" JAPANESE MEIJI PERIOD CALLIGRAPHY STYLE INK MONOCHROME PAINTING HANGING SCROLL BY TAKI KATEI FROM 19TH CENTURY
Here's a wonderful Japanese antique MEIJI PERIOD ink monochrome painting mounted as a hanging scroll by the artist TAKI KATEI (1830-1901)) from my personal Japanese art collection. It measures 46 3/4" x 18 1/8" (image on paper 12 3/4" x 17") plus another 1 1/4" on either side of the bottom including the off-white celluloid end caps. It features a wonderful ASSYMETRICAL "crab in reeds" which would be found on a Japanese beach or in a tide pool.
The brush strokes have a nice CALLIGRAPHY form with thin - thick lines and dabs along with a "running calligraphy" brush stroke on the right side. The upper-left corner has two seals of Taki Katei (see photo). The hanging scroll is made of silk with chrysanthemum flowers surrounding the painting. Taki Katei's paintings were exhibited at the Vienna Exposition during 1873 and he was a member of the Art Committee of Emperor Meiji's Imperial Household. I estimate this antique Japanese painting mounted as a hanging scroll to be from the 1880's-1890's.
